Apr 4th 1-2-3: Trim The Distractions
1: Trim The Distractions ( 2 minute read )
So much to watch, read, listen to, and so little time.
Distractions are so easy to come by in this day and age. It’s been talked about a ton, but our phones make it all too simple for us to assuage any bit of boredom. We feel like nothing is happening, so then we scroll.
What if this is causing more problems than it solves?
The phone isn’t the only distraction, but it is the most common way to have our focus pulled away from what we truly want to focus on. So how do we solve this?
We must change our relationship with our distractions.
I think a great way to do this is to look at the reasons why removing distractions can be so important. For one, the longer you remove distractions the more quiet your mind will be. The constant barrage in our minds are just a symptom of what our brains go through when we scroll.
Staying away allows our brains time to heal, and thus to create more deeply.
Second, removing distractions increases our productivity exponentially. Have you ever thought to yourself, “I’m great at multitasking?” I used to think that too, but study after study shows that no one is better at multitasking than they are at focusing on a singular task.
Focus on one thing, one important thing, and your creativity will absolutely improve.
Lastly, as we remove distractions and our brains heal, the quiet and focus will bring about the ability to solve deeper more complex problems. I have noticed a big difference when rendering out more complex pieces, or with writing my novel. You will notice the same differences.
Change your relationship with distractions, it is not just the time that you spend while being distracted, it is also how it changes your brain while you are away.
You will find a more fulfilling times with creating and with solving problems as you heal your mind.
I hope this helps!
2: Creative Prompts From Us (ex. Write a short story, a poem, a song, or draw a quick illustration of these! Let your imagination run free.)
I. Wait 90 minutes before engaging with your phone upon waking. Scientific evidence shows that those first 90 minutes are key to how the rest of your day goes.
II. Notice when you are bored, and notice how you are drawn to distraction. Ignore it, knowing that your mind will heal and become stronger, more focused, and more creative.
3: Inspirational Quotes From Others
I. “Lost time is never found again.” — Benjamin Franklin
II. “Concentrate all your thoughts upon the work in hand. The sun’s rays do not burn until brought to a focus.” — Alexander Graham Bell
III. “Out of clutter, find simplicity.” — Albert Einstein
