Apr 11th 1-2-3: Taste and Creativity
1: Taste and Creativity ( 1 minute read )
Think back to why you wanted to create something to begin with.
For most people, it is because their taste in art had refined to a point where they wanted to create something fresh and new themselves. This is typically the case, as our preferences in art tend to guide us to new works. Eventually, we find ourselves wanting to make something that we don’t see exists yet.
Then why when we start creating does it not live up to our tastes?
This is because our work hasn’t caught up to our tastes yet. In a quote from radio show host, Ira Glass, he said “For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good… But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you… The most important thing you can do is do a lot of work.”
This is so important to remember.
Doing a lot of work does a few things. In a general sense it helps our creating to catch up with our tastes. the more we output, the more we can find what lives up and doesn’t to our developed sensibilities.
It also has another key effect.
It evolves our art as we take action. Through sheer quantity we are able to refine through our failures and produce more quality works of art. This evolves not only our works, but furthers our tastes.
The more we create, the more we also find our own voice.
When we begin to create, a lot of what we make is a retelling or rephrase of something someone we admire made. As we create more we are able to find how we like to create. In this, we find our own unique voice.
So continue creating! Only you can make what you are driven to make.
2: Creative Prompts From Us (ex. Write a short story, a poem, a song, or draw a quick illustration of these! Let your imagination run free.)
I. List your top three favorite artists/creators. Then list out three words to describe what you most like about their work.
II. Pick a body of work that you love most. Now go recreate some aspect of it in your own voice. How did it turn out? What did you learn?
3: Inspirational Quotes From Others
I. “The best way to have a good idea is to have lots of ideas.” - Linus Pauling
