Mar 28th 1-2-3: Don’t Think

1: Don’t Think ( 2 minute read )

We feel, think, and refuse to do too much.

Every action with forethought put before it. I know I am not alone in this. Are creatives overthinkers, or are overthinkers creative?

Another passing of the arm against the clock, the same time on the phone as yesterday and nothing changed.

It can be so easy to think too much.

I recently realized that if I think I may be overthinking something, chances are high I have been already overthinking that for too long by that point.

Every stroke, every note, every word with thought. Like a horse before the cart, it is backwards.

Might I suggest an interesting solution?

Don’t think.

Just write, just draw, just create whatever you are meant to create. You’d be surprised how much thinking occurs naturally already without you having to perpetuate it. Besides, wouldn’t you rather have something to show for it?

I recently began doing this.

Instead of contemplating how I was to tackle a piece, I just started drawing. Rather than wonder where the next part of my novel will go, I just began writing in order to find out for myself. Not thinking.

We don’t realize how much of our minds can meld into the process when we just let it.

Much like a car trying to get to second gear, we need to build speed, torque, momentum so we can move onto the next gear. And not unlike an engine deprived of gas, our minds deprived of action make it so that we can never shift up. We rarely if ever get moving.

Just keep doing, and don’t think. Let your instincts guide you. Besides, you can always edit what you’ve made after it is created. You can’t edit a blank canvas.

Have peace, be excited, be courageous, and create. Don’t pump the brakes with your thoughts. Press on the acceleration with your actions.

I hope your weekend is filled with new experiences and delights!

2: Creative Prompts From Us (ex. Write a short story, a poem, a song, or draw a quick illustration of these! Let your imagination run free.)

I. After finishing this newsletter, go make something. It can be anything, it can be small, but go right into action. If you can’t immediately, do it at the next available time.

II. Consciously think about which of your thoughts occur the most that prevent you from taking action. Now chose to no longer believe them. They don’t help you anyways.

3: Inspirational Quotes From Others

I. "Take things as they are. Punch when you have to punch. Kick when you have to kick." – Bruce Lee

II. "To think too much is a disease." – Fyodor Dostoevsky

III. "The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another." – William James

Thank you so much for reading!
